WHAT IS RISOGRAPH?

Risograph is a printing process combining digital and traditional printing methods. The result is a product that utilizes the speed and cost efficiency of a modern printer, all while maintaining a hand-made feel.

The Riso Kagaku Corporation is the inventor and distributor of Riso print equipment, and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Originally marketed for high volume and inexpensive duplicating, the Risograph is primarily used by businesses, schools, and organizations that require large quantities of the same design. Because of its similarity to screen printing, the Risograph has been adopted by artists and designers seeking vibrant colors and uniform print production.

HOW DOES RISOGRAPH PRINTING WORK?

The Riso duplicator creates an internal stencil which is laid onto a spinning drum filled with ink. As the drum spins, it forces ink through the stencil and onto the paper, which is passing under the drum. Ink dries by absorbing into the paper, but never dries 100%, and behaves similarly to newsprint.

IS RISOGRAPH PRINTING ARCHIVAL?

No. Riso printing is not archival, and can fade over time if exposed to UV rays directly. To prevent fading, it’s recommended to utilize Risograph for books, portfolio work, or display prints protected by UV glass, or in a spot where it won’t be in direct sunlight.

DO YOU OFFER DESIGN SERVICES?

Yes! We’d love to help bring your idea to life. Design services include, but are not limited to, flyers, brochures, posters, and business cards. Read more about our design services HERE.

CAN YOU HELP ME PREP MY DIGITAL FILES?

We sure can! If you’re new to Riso and need some extra help, or you just can’t be bothered to spend time prepping your files, we’re happy to do so for an additional fee. Just be sure to include this when you fill out our quote form.
